Thousands of families have been left with their homes destroyed in Australia, after the forest fires in recent months. The Zagame family found that much of their home in Wairewa had been burned in the fires.
Family members walked through what used to be their home to see what had survived. Sadly, there wasn’t much to hold onto.
But for OJ, the family dog, there was good news amid the devastation. OJ discovered that his most beloved toy had survived, and he couldn’t be happier that he found it.
Dog finds his favorite toy after the fire
Louisa Cheatley, a reporter for 7 News Melbourne, posted a photo of the adorable Golden Retriever cradling the stuffed animal in her mouth on Twitter after finding it in the rubble.
Louisa said:
“’OJ’ returned to his Wairewa home today which was completely destroyed by fire. He found his favorite stuffed toy in the rubble.
In addition to OJ’s beloved toy, another item that survived the fire was Katie Zagami’s wedding dress. But, while the family is grateful to find these two objects, they are also devastated to have lost their home, and it is very difficult for them to be there and see all that devastation.
According to the city’s fire brigade, the Zagami family home was one of 11 homes destroyed in Wairewa. Fortunately, the community was evacuated in time and no lives were lost or seriously injured.
The OJ plush is a reminder that a little comfort can go a long way when things are looking bleaker.
However, the family knows that the most valuable thing is life, and although at first they hesitated to go to a safe place, now they are grateful for having done so, because over time material things are recovered, and life does not.
