In our culture, the idea of eating dog meat is extremely disgusting, but in many parts of the world, especially in Asia, it is not seen that way. In South Korea one of the largest dog meat markets is about to close due to the cruel reality behind this trade.
According to the Humane Society International (HSI) , in the Moran Market, the largest dog meat market in the country, at least 80,000 dogs are sold per year, whether they are alive or dead, this market is responsible for supplying a third of the dog meat throughout South Korea.
Seongnam Mayor Lee Jae-Myung quoted Mahatma Gandhi as saying:
“Seongnam will take the initiative to transform the image of South Korea as ‘the greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated'”.
Jang In-young, spokesperson for the Korea Animal Welfare Association, stated:
“Seongnam City took a big step towards changing the dog meat industry here, but we are going to have to constantly keep an eye on dog meat shops in the market (to see) if they really stop dog slaughter and change their businesses.
The dogs in the Moran Market are cruelly killed with methods such as electrocution, hanging or fatal blows.

HSI teams have been commissioned to visit dog meat vendors to present various options for transitioning their businesses to a more humane model, and the Seongnam authorities will provide financial support to make this change.
President of the organization In Defense of Animals (IDA), Dr. Marilyn Kroplick said:
“We thank the Seongnam officials and the Mayor, Jae Myung Lee, for taking a humane position. The Moran Market has taken the blood of hundreds of thousands of dogs for many years, so this is a step in the right direction in our fight to end the terrible dog meat trade.
