The terrible fires that occurred in Australia have destroyed the country’s wildlife paradise, and many of the animals have suffered terrible burns on their bodies, so good-hearted people decided to transform a school into a hospital for koalas.
The news is proof of how the best version of human beings can also shine through in the midst of tragedies.
This initiative to create a hospital for koalas was born by the hand of Adelaide Koala Rescue , which is a non-profit organization that has been dedicated to protecting adorable marsupials for many years.
School turned into a hospital for koalas
The organization has adapted the facilities of Paradise Elementary School, northeast of Adelaide, and there are more than 150 volunteers working there, including at least 80 trained veterinarians, who want to find a larger shelter to take care of more animals.
Jane Brister, Director of Adelaide Koala Rescue said:
“We get koalas that are burned everywhere. It seems that they huddled together in a great mass and the fire simply passed over them.
In the hospital the animals are separated in pens according to their needs, so in one of them there are orphaned marsupials, in another there are koalas with burns, and there is even a specific place for those who are infected with chlamydia. , which is a very common disease among koalas.
35 animals have been discharged from the koala hospital, but sadly they will not be able to return to their homes due to the destruction caused by the wildfires. On the other hand, some have had to be euthanized due to the severity of their injuries.
Like any patient in a hospital, there all koalas are given names, have their respective medical records, and are closely followed throughout their recovery process.
Jane said:
“The experience is overwhelming and heartbreaking. Many people in our team have seen things that have marked them for life and will need specialized help to overcome them, others have been so affected that they want to be in the hospital 24/7 ”.
Most of the koalas taken in by the organization were rescued from Cudlee Creek, near Adelaide.
On the other hand, it is feared that more than half of the 50,000 koala inhabitants of Kangaroo Island have died.
According to the Daily Mail , Sussan Ley, Australia’s Environment Minister, stated that the population of these marsupials in the country suffered an “extraordinary blow” as a result of the forest fires, suggesting that they could be classified as an “endangered” species.
Due to the critical situation, all the volunteers at the hospital are making an effort to help the animals, which now number more than 100, fortunately, they have the support of some donations made through a GoFundMe campaign.
This is a very difficult time in which the greatest possible help is needed, so if you are interested and in the ability to provide financial support, you can make a donation by clicking here .
