Jenny is a mare living in the Fechenheim neighborhood of Frankfurt, Germany, who walks the streets every morning, along the same route and without the need for a guide.
This mare has been walking alone for 14 years since her owner Werner Weischedel, 79, was unable to ride her, but the man leaves her free every day to go out for a walk on the routes they used to be together.
Werner explained to FNP that before with his wife Anna, they had another mare named Charlie and a white shepherd with whom they walked, they looked like a white caravan.
Mare has been walking the streets alone for 14 years
Jenny does the route 8 times a day before returning home at exactly noon to eat, according to Werner, it seems she has a clock on her stomach.
She wears a small sign on her harness that says:
“My name is Jenny, I have not run away, I am just taking a walk, thank you.”
The neighbors always enjoy seeing this mare, the children adore her, when they see her they run to pet her, and the police claim that she is totally harmless.
Werner said:
The police know. When someone calls, they ask me if I know where Jenny is, and since I say yes, everything is in order.
Jenny is a very calm, charismatic mare and she has friends everywhere, although some people do not agree with the fact that she walks alone, in 14 years there has never been an accident, she only nibbles the bushes and usually her journey runs together to the tram rails. Drivers know her and slow down when she is nearby.
Werner doesn’t think Jenny will eat any poisonous plants on the way, but once she ran into a field full of sweet corn and ate too much, they had to take her to the vet for two weeks.
The man also takes care of other animals when Jenny is out for a walk, he has chickens, pigeons, canaries, cats and a miniature pinscher .
On social media, people criticize that the mare is walking alone. They also say that she is putting herself and others in danger.
However, Maren Hellige of the Equine Veterinary Association said:
“Jenny exercises a lot on her walks and seems very relaxed and content.”
After finishing her walk, Jenny returns to her barn in the afternoon to eat and rest until the next day. Every day he leaves the barn regardless of the weather. If it rains or is very cold, Werner covers her with a blanket and she goes out for a walk.
