Forastero is one of the 11 dogs rescued by Martín Miranda and his family, who also rescued a horse that was going to be donated to a zoo as food for the lions. The horse they called Canary was very sick, until the end came and the dog accompanied his friend, he never left him alone.

Canary was very weak and could hardly stand on his legs, but even so, the family decided to ask the owner to give them to them to try to save him. They could not resign themselves to the idea of ​​letting this horse die and before they had rescued chickens, rabbits and dogs.

Canario lived with Martín’s family for five months, and in all that time he did not improve. Canario’s medical condition worsened until he could no longer get back on his feet.

The members of Aid to Abused Horses ( ACMA ), from Argentina, received an alert from another NGO , Volunteers for our horses ( VPN ), about a horse that was lying on the ground and could not get up.

They and the veterinarian Corse left for the place, but when they got there they found what seemed at first glance to be a case of abandonment and animal abuse.

But when talking with Martín and examining the horse, the veterinarian realized that it was a very old horse, which had lived 37 years, the equivalent of 98 years for humans. Taking into account that the maximum that a horse lives is 35 to 40 years on average. The family was surprised to learn that the horse was not young as they thought.

They tried to lift Canario with the help of firefighters, but the animal did not show strength.

Dog accompanied his friend, a dying horse to the end

In fact, the horse was already very old and very exhausted, its bones were eaten away, it had no teeth and it had clear signs of wear, typical of its advanced age.

Then the veterinarian Corse understood that he was not facing another case of mistreatment of horses, common in the area where they are used as carriages until they are killed by exhaustion.

Martín’s family was also very sad and desperate because their beloved Canary couldn’t take it anymore.

Canario couldn’t get up anymore because he was dying, so the vet gave him an injection so he could sleep and finally rest from his long journey through life.

The news of sacrificing Canario produced stupor in the family, but they finally understood that the horse they believed was young and deteriorated was an old animal that wanted to rest in peace.

Meanwhile Canario was not alone, as Forastero, his faithful friend, was by his side until the end. The dog rested its head on Canario’s and offered its company.

Canario was buried on the house’s grounds, in a well that Martin and his family dug as tears ran down his face.
