In the United States there are a large number of homeless people who take with them a pet that they consider a fundamental part of their family and that even going through terrible conditions they refuse to leave, that is why a New York organization called Collide has been in charge of provide shelter and care for homeless people and animals alike.
This organization provides, in addition to medical and veterinary care services, meals twice a week with a picnic style. All of these kindness are truly strange to these people and their pets who have been treated like unimportant beings for years.
Collide offers its refugees a new hope of life and totally humane treatment. The affection that exists between the homeless and their pets is much more significant than that of many others who have a large amount of material belongings.
These homeless people strive to achieve the well-being of their faithful companions in life, and that is why the Collide organization, which is located on the Lower East Side of New York, took the initiative to help them.
This is proof that the love of the homeless and their pets transcends past problems. Animals turn out to be a great consolation, they do not complain and on many occasions they have more decent behaviors than human beings themselves.
Collide volunteer Jeff Latzer told The Huffington Post :
“They are a very marginalized population whose lives are harder than anything you or I can imagine, in particular the health and safety issues that the homeless face . ”
“And yet the number one priority is always the welfare of your companion animals.”

Collide also seeks to dispel misconceptions that homeless people cannot be good for a pet due to their devastating conditions.

“We got a call from a grieving customer who told us that when he woke up in the morning, his dog’s leash had been cut, with only a crudely written letter saying ‘We gave your dog a better life.”
Homeless people and their pets get help from a shelter
It is not easy for the organization to get the resources to help so many homeless people and animals, but this is not enough reason for them to refuse to help, Collide hopes to be able to partner with other organizations and thus find a greater number of donors or veterinarians who contribute their services.
Latzer said:
“Pets can be a very therapeutic presence in the lives of the homeless, from a psychological and spiritual point of view.”
“Especially for people facing extreme adversity, this can be a very important relationship, even to keep them alive.”
